Um

Um Lava Show Vík

Indoor Vík demonstration where basaltic rock is reheated and poured as molten lava.

Stand 2 metres from flowing lava at 1,100°C — an experience that is genuinely impossible to replicate anywhere else on Earth.

Bakgrunnur

Saga og bakgrunnur

Lava Show Vík was created as an educational attraction to demonstrate volcanic processes using real molten basalt in a controlled indoor setting. Its location in Vík places the experience close to the Katla and Mýrdalsjökull volcanic landscape, allowing guides to connect the live demonstration with the geology and eruption history of South Iceland.

Lava Show Vík is an indoor demonstration of molten basalt. Rock is reheated and poured in front of the audience so visitors can observe how lava flows, cools and changes texture while guides explain the geological processes involved. Show times, prices and booking availability should be checked directly before visiting.

Þjóðsögur

Saga og þjóðsögur

Lava Show is a uniquely Icelandic experience located in the village of Vík á Mýrdal, near the black sand beaches of the South Coast. The 35-minute presentation begins with storytelling about Icelandic volcanoes before the main event — genuine molten rock poured down a channel within arm's reach of the audience. Safety glasses are provided as the lava glows red-orange and crackles as it cools. The guide explains volcanic chemistry, minerals and the process of lava formation. Children are wide-eyed; adults are equally stunned. One of the most memorable 45 minutes you can spend in Iceland.

Visstu að?

The Lava Show heats basaltic rock in a furnace to over 1,000°C and pours it in front of a live audience. The heat, glow and smell are completely real — not a simulation.
