Landmannahellir has long served travellers crossing the Fjallabak highlands. The natural cave gave the site its name and was traditionally used as shelter for people and horses. Today the area has mountain huts and camping facilities and connects with hiking routes including Hellismannaleið. Access is seasonal via highland roads, including F225.
