Kúalaug
South Iceland
Kúalaug is a pair of intimate, natural geothermal hot spring pools nestled amidst lush green and golden grasses in South Iceland. Located just 2 km from Geysir, it offers a tranquil escape, reflecting the sky in its warm, inviting waters.
A quiet, undeveloped natural hot pool just minutes from Geysir, for travelers happy to trade facilities for authenticity.
Saga
Just a couple of kilometres from the crowds at Geysir, Kúalaug is easy to miss — two small natural pools tucked into a patch of grass beside the road in the Haukadalur area, barely announced by a low ring of stones around the smaller one. There is no car park sign or ticket booth, just warm water rising through the ground and pooling among the grasses, with the wide skies of South Iceland reflected on its surface. It's a rustic, unmanicured spot — the pool floor is soft with mud and a little algae, and the temperature shifts depending on exactly where you sit, hotter near where the spring feeds in. Because it has no infrastructure at all, Kúalaug asks for a bit of care from visitors: no changing rooms, no barriers, just a fragile patch of ground that is easy to damage if people aren't careful where they step.
Saga
No documented founding history exists for Kúalaug. Like many small geothermal pools scattered across the Haukadalur/Geysir area, it appears to be a naturally occurring spring rather than a built or dated attraction.
Visstu að?
Kúalaug's water temperature isn't uniform — it runs hotter, up to around 43°C (109°F), near where the spring surfaces, and cooler toward the pool's edges, so bathers shift position to find their comfortable spot.

Algengar spurningar
How close is Kúalaug to Geysir?+
About 2 km, making it an easy stop if you are already visiting the Geysir geothermal area or the wider Golden Circle.
Are there changing rooms or facilities?+
No. There are no changing rooms, toilets or showers — visitors typically leave belongings on the grass nearby, so bring a towel and be prepared to change outdoors.
Is it free to visit?+
Yes, Kúalaug is a natural, unmanaged pool with no admission fee.
Is it safe to get in?+
Take care — the pool floor is muddy and can be slippery with algae, and the surrounding grass is delicate. Enter carefully and try to stay on existing paths rather than trampling the vegetation.
