Keldur koma við sögu í Brennunjálssögu þar sem bærinn er einn af höfuðbólum Oddverja. Á Keldum bjó Ingjaldur Höskuldsson sem brást Flosa í aðförinni að Bergþórshvoli. Voldugasti kirkjugoði 12. aldar Jón Loftsson (1124-1197) bjó á Keldum (1). „Á keldum er forn skáli sem er elsta bygging sinnar gerðar á Íslandi og jarðgöng frá söguöld. Sandfok og uppblástur sóttu mjög að Keldum um aldamótin 1900, en þáverandi ábúanda, Skúla Guðmundsyni, tókst að hefta sandfokið og forða jörðinni frá auðn“ (2).
