Jökulfirðir

Jökulfirðir is a remote group of fjords in the northern Westfjords, adjoining the Hornstrandir wilderness. Unlike most of Iceland's better-known fjord districts, much of the area is not connected by road, so travel commonly involves boat transport, hiking or both. The fjords contain traces of former farms and small settlements that were gradually abandoned as residents moved to communities with easier transport and services. Today, those remains add a strong cultural layer to the landscape. Steep mountains rise directly from the sea, valleys open behind sheltered coves, and the absence of modern development makes the area feel exceptionally remote. Jökulfirðir is not a casual roadside attraction. Visitors should plan transport, weather windows and hiking logistics carefully, especially when travelling beyond established boat drop-off points. For travellers prepared for that level of planning, the area offers one of the clearest transitions in Iceland from inhabited coastal history to true Westfjords wilderness.
