Bakgrunnur
Saga og bakgrunnur
Hvaleyrarviti is part of Iceland’s network of coastal lighthouses developed to improve maritime safety. As shipping and fishing increased, such beacons became essential for navigation. Today, it continues to operate automatically, representing both the history of Icelandic seafaring and modern navigation systems.
Hvaleyrarviti is an active coastal lighthouse in Kjósarhreppur on the southern side of Hvalfjörður, at approximately 64.3426° N, 21.7315° W. Do not confuse it with Hvaleyri in Hafnarfjörður, much farther south. The lighthouse is not a staffed attraction or observation tower; no regular public climb is verified. Before visiting, check lawful access, private land boundaries, rural road conditions and weather. The shoreline can be slippery and dangerous in strong winds or surf.
Þjóðsögur
Saga og þjóðsögur
Hvaleyrarviti is a small lighthouse on Hvaleyri point along the south shore of Hvalfjörður. The setting is rural Kjósarhreppur, not Hafnarfjörður's Hvaleyri peninsula. The lighthouse is a navigation aid rather than a visitor tower, and the surrounding coast is exposed to wind, tides and access restrictions.
Staðbundin þjóðsaga
The Light That Never Sleeps
Some local stories suggest that the light of Hvaleyrarviti feels different on certain nights—stronger, more persistent, as if it is watching rather than simply guiding. A few visitors have described moments when the lighthouse seemed to glow even when conditions didn’t quite explain it. Whether it’s reflection, weather, or imagination, the idea remains that the light is always present—never truly at rest.
