Today, Hvaleyrarlón and Hvaleyrarhöfði serve as an important green area within Hafnarfjörður, valued for both its ecological role and its accessibility to the public.

Hvaleyrarlón and the shores of Hvaleyrarhöfði are coastal wetlands and shoreline habitats in Hafnarfjörður. This is a tidal lagoon, not a freshwater inland lake. Birdlife can be observed from public areas, but nesting habitats and mudflats are sensitive and can be hazardous underfoot. Use lawful public paths, watch tidal water and weather, and keep a safe distance from birds and shoreline edges.
