Um

Bakgrunnur

Saga og bakgrunnur

The current Hallgrímskirkja í Saurbæ was designed by Eyjólfur Þorvarðsson and built in the mid-20th century, replacing earlier churches that had stood on the site. The location has long been associated with Hallgrímur Pétursson, who served there as a priest in the 1600s. Over time, the church has become an important cultural landmark, preserving both the religious traditions of the area and the literary legacy of one of Iceland’s most significant historical figures.

Hallgrímskirkja í Vindáshlíð is an 1878 timber church located at Vindáshlíð in Kjósarhreppur. The building originally stood in Saurbær on Hvalfjarðarströnd, before being moved to Vindáshlíð in 1957. It is distinct from the present-day Hallgrímskirkja in Saurbær and from the landmark Hallgrímskirkja in central Reykjavík. The building is associated with Vindáshlíð's KFUM/KFUK activity and is not a regularly open commercial attraction. Check current access permission and site activity before making a dedicated visit.

Þjóðsögur

Saga og þjóðsögur

The church at Vindáshlíð is a historic timber building, originally erected at Saurbær by Hvalfjörður in 1878. It was moved to Vindáshlíð in 1957, where it stands today. This is a separate location from the present church at Saurbær. Vindáshlíð is in Kjósarhreppur, one of the municipalities of the Capital Region. It belongs to the local camp organisation, so visitors should verify permission and access rather than assuming it is a walk-in museum.

Staðbundin þjóðsaga

A historic countryside church by Hvalfjörður, closely connected to the life and writings of Hallgrímur Pétursson.

On the shores of Hvalfjörður, the church at Saurbær stands in a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. It was here that Hallgrímur Pétursson lived and worked as a clergyman in the 17th century, drawing inspiration from the quiet surroundings as he composed the Passion Hymns. The isolation of the area, combined with its natural beauty, created a setting for deep reflection and spiritual writing. Although the present church was built much later, it continues to represent this connection between place and creativity. Visitors who arrive today encounter more than just a rural church—they step into a location where Icelandic literature, faith, and landscape come together in a single, enduring story.
