Bakgrunnur

Saga og bakgrunnur

Háifoss was known locally before receiving its present descriptive name. Visit South Iceland records that geologist Helgi Pétursson named the waterfall Háifoss in 1912. The 122-metre drop on Fossá and neighbouring Granni later became one of the best-known viewpoints in the Þjórsárdalur and Hekla area.

Háifoss drops 122 metres from the Fossá river into a deep canyon in the Þjórsárdalur area. The neighbouring waterfall Granni is visible from the same general viewpoint. A parking area lies above the falls, and a longer hiking option follows Fossá from the Stöng area. Road and weather conditions should be checked before driving into the interior.
