History & Background
Grenjaðarstaður státar af langri og mikilli sögu, sem nær aftur til landnámsaldar Íslands. Um aldir var hann ein af mikilvægustu bændakirkjum og bæjarstöðum á Norðurlandi, sem þjónaði sem andleg og stjórnunarleg miðstöð fyrir Aðaldal. Talið er að fyrsta kirkjan hér hafi verið byggð skömmu eftir kristnitöku á Íslandi um árið 1000, sem er vitnisburður um varanlegt trúarlegt mikilvægi hennar.
