„Hraun í Norðurárdal, úfið apalhraun en víða vaxið mosa, lyngi eða jafnvel trjágróðri. Það hefur runnið úr sérkennilegum og fagurformuðum gjallgígum, Grábrókargígum, sem rísa norðan vegarins þegar farið er um Norðurárdal“ (1). Grábrókarhraun allt, ásamt Hreðavatni, er á náttúruminjaskrá Vesturlands. Svæðið er talið bjóða upp á fjölbreytt og fagurt umhverfi ásamt því að vera fjölsótt útivistarsvæði. Á nokkrum stöðum innan friðaða svæðisins má finna setlög með steingerðum plöntum frá tertíer sérstaklega í Brekkuárgili, Hestabrekku og Þrimilsdal (2).
