Gólfþvottur (Floor Washing) is a sculpture by Ásmundur Sveinsson located in the outdoor sculpture environment connected to Ásmundarsafn in Reykjavík. The work reflects Ásmundur’s distinctive artistic approach, in which everyday human activity became an important subject of modern Icelandic sculpture during the 20th century. Rather than portraying historical figures or heroic themes, Gólfþvottur focuses on a simple domestic task. By presenting the act of washing a floor as a sculptural subject, Ásmundur emphasized the dignity of ordinary work and the physical presence of the human body in motion. The figure’s posture and simplified form reflect the artist’s modernist style, where movement, balance, and effort are more important than detailed realism. Ásmundur Sveinsson played a central role in shaping Iceland’s modern sculpture tradition. His works often explored the relationship between people, labour, and the environment, presenting everyday actions as expressions of cultural identity and shared experience. Sculptures such as Gólfþvottur demonstrate his belief that daily life and physical work deserved a place in public art alongside more traditional subjects. Today, the sculpture forms part of Reykjavík’s rich outdoor art landscape and contributes to the unique atmosphere surrounding Ásmundarsafn, where visitors can experience a wide range of works that connect human activity, modernist form, and Icelandic cultural history.
Þjóðsögur
Saga og þjóðsögur
Gólfþvottur reflects Ásmundur Sveinsson’s distinctive approach to sculpture, where ordinary human actions became meaningful artistic subjects. Instead of focusing on kings, heroes, or historical events, Ásmundur chose to portray the rhythm of everyday life. In this work, the simple act of washing a floor becomes a study of movement, balance, and effort. Created during a period when Icelandic artists were shaping a modern national visual language, the sculpture helped shift attention toward the experiences of ordinary people. Ásmundur believed that daily work—whether indoors or outdoors—was part of the cultural identity of the nation. Through simplified forms and strong posture, the figure expresses concentration and physical presence rather than detailed realism. Today, placed among other works connected to Ásmundarsafn, Gólfþvottur invites visitors to look differently at familiar activities. It reminds viewers that even the most routine tasks can become symbols of dignity, movement, and human creativity when seen through the eyes of an artist.
