History & Background

GeoSea opened in 2018 as part of Húsavík's development as a premier North Iceland destination. The facility takes advantage of a natural geothermal seawater spring that produces mineral-rich water at bathing temperature. The elevated cliff-side position means bathers often see humpback whales in the bay below while soaking in the warm saltwater pools.

GeoSea is one of the most interesting natural attractions in north-iceland of Iceland.

GeoSea opened in 2018 on a cliff top above Húsavík harbour — a geothermal sea baths facility where ocean salt water drawn from the sea floor is mixed with geothermal water to create the pools. The setting is exceptional: the pools are positioned at the cliff-top edge so bathers look directly out over the whale-watching bay of Skjálfandi and the mountains beyond. Húsavík is Iceland's whale-watching capital and between 1 June and 20 August, humpback whales are visible from the pool on many days. The facility has maintained a focus on quality over scale — the pools are not huge but the cocktail bar, changing facilities and views are excellent.

GeoSea has been part of Icelandic folklore for generations. Local tales speak of hidden people (huldufólk) and other supernatural beings who inhabit the area. According to tradition, this place deserves respect and visitors should be mindful of the ancient spirits who call it home.
