Bakgrunnur
Saga og bakgrunnur
The hot pots have become a well-known community bathing stop on the Drangsnes seafront. Their significance is not a grand historic event but the continuing Icelandic tradition of using geothermal water for everyday bathing and social life. The simple tubs and coastal setting reflect the small-scale, local character of Drangsnes rather than a purpose-built spa experience.
Drangsnes Hot Pots are three simple geothermal tubs set directly beside the sea in the village of Drangsnes on the Strandir coast. Their appeal is the combination of warm water and open views across Steingrímsfjörður, with the shoreline only a few steps away. The tubs vary in temperature, allowing bathers to choose the most comfortable one. The setting is deliberately simple rather than resort-like: this is a small community bathing spot on the seafront, and visitors should treat it with the same respect they would a local public space. Bring a towel, keep the area tidy and follow any posted local guidance. Conditions can feel very different by season. Summer offers long daylight and broad fjord views, while darker months can provide a peaceful soak under clear skies. Weather on the Strandir coast changes quickly, so wind and cold can make getting in and out part of the experience. Drangsnes Hot Pots are one of the most memorable low-key stops in the eastern Westfjords, particularly because the bathing experience is so closely connected to the sea and village around it.
Þjóðsögur
Saga og þjóðsögur
At the end of the road in Drangsnes village — one of the most remote communities in the Westfjords — three simple concrete hot pots sit right at the edge of the sea wall, heated by natural geothermal springs. The water temperature varies between pots, typically 37–42°C. The fjord is immediately below. The village has a church, a few dozen houses, the iconic Malarhorn sea stack just offshore, and nothing else. Using these tubs is free, in keeping with the village's approach: the community simply keeps them clean and maintains the temperature. On a winter morning, with snow on the mountains and steam rising from the pots, Drangsnes is one of Iceland's most quietly remarkable places.
