„Jarðhitasvæði vestan undir Námaskarði, um 4 km frá Reykjahlíð. Þar urðu eldsumbrot og miklar náttúruhamfarir á árunum 1724-29 og aftur í Kröflueldum á árinu 1977“ (1). „Land sprakk, gliðnaði og seig og urðu m.a. töluverðar skemmdir á mannvirkjum Kísiliðjunnar“ (2). Verksmiðjan var starfrekin á árunum 1966 til 2004 en hún vann kísilgúr út botnleðju Mývatns (3).
