Arnarstapi is a small fishing village on the southern coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, where the lava meets the Atlantic in a spectacular series of arches, sea caves and basalt columns. The 2.5-kilometre coastal walk between Arnarstapi and Hellnar (or vice versa) is one of the most beautiful short walks in Iceland: Arctic terns nest on every rock shelf, kittiwakes fill the cliff ledges, seals bobble offshore, and the basalt rock formations are endlessly varied and strange. The village has a large statue of Bárður Snæfellsás, a half-giant half-man from the sagas who transformed into the guardian spirit of Snæfellsnes. A perfect microcosm of everything that makes the Snæfellsnes peninsula extraordinary.
