Álfaborg hefur lengi verið miðpunktur álfasagna á Borgarfirði eystri. Svæðið var friðlýst árið 1976 til útivistar og almennrar notkunar.
Álfaborg stendur rétt hjá Bakkagerði á Borgarfirði eystri og er eitt þekktasta þjóðtrúarkennileiti Austurlands. Staðbundin hefð segir að Álfadrottning Íslands búi í borginni og margar sögur eru til um samskipti álfa og heimamanna. Álfaborg var friðlýst sem fólkvangur árið 1976. Þægileg gönguleið liggur upp á toppinn þar sem hringsjá hjálpar gestum að greina fjöllin umhverfis Borgarfjörð.
