Reykjaböð Hot Springs
South Iceland, Hveragerði
Reykjaböð Hot Springs is a modern geothermal hot springs and bathhouse in Hveragerði, South Iceland, at the foot of Reykjadalur valley. It combines naturally heated water, mountain views, sauna rituals, cold plunge bathing and modern facilities about 35 minutes from Reykjavík.
️ Advance booking is strongly recommended. The minimum age for the hot springs is 10 years, and the signature Bathhouse spa is 18+. Guests under 18 must be supervised. Shower before entering the pools, follow posted safety rules, and always check the official booking calendar for current opening status, prices and availability.
Soak in a purpose-built, spa-grade geothermal lagoon fed by the same underground heat as Reykjadalur's wild hot river — without the hike.
Saga
At the mouth of Reykjadalur — the "Steam Valley" that has drawn bathers up its hot river for generations — Reykjaböð opened on 5 September 2026 as Iceland's newest purpose-built geothermal bathing destination. The lagoon holds untreated geothermal water drawn from the ground beneath Hveragerði into a 900 m² pool kept around 37–40°C, looking up toward the same steaming hillsides that made this valley famous long before any spa stood here. Beyond the lagoon, the architecture leans into restraint rather than spectacle: low, greenhouse-inspired buildings sit tucked into the land, echoing Hveragerði's century-old identity as Iceland's geothermal greenhouse town, while a ten-room bathhouse sequences guests through contrasting saunas, cold plunges and steam rooms in a ritual borrowed from Japanese onsen and Nordic bathing tradition alike. It is, in effect, an engineered and considerably more comfortable version of the same warm water that hikers have soaked in barefoot a short walk further up the valley for decades.
Saga
Reykjaböð is genuinely new. After more than five years of planning and roughly two years of construction, and a reported investment of about 4 billion ISK, the site opened to the public on 5 September 2026 at the foot of Reykjadalur valley. At the opening, managing director Jóhanna Hreiðarsdóttir said "a new chapter in the bathing experience in Iceland has begun" — a nod to the fact that the valley itself, and Hveragerði's long tradition of building around geothermal heat (the town grew up on greenhouses warmed by the same underground water), proved this water's value long before the bathhouse existed.
