Hveraborg
North Iceland
Nestled amidst the rugged, grassy moorlands of North Iceland, Hveraborg offers a tranquil escape in its natural geothermal pool. This stone-lined basin, fed by a warm spring, invites visitors to experience Iceland's raw volcanic beauty up close. Steam gently rises from the 37°C waters, creating an ethereal atmosphere in the wild landscape.
Saga
Reached only after an hour's walk across the wind-scoured moorland of Tvídægra, Hveraborg rewards the effort with two natural pools where geothermal water surfaces directly inside the Síká river, at a gentle 37–39°C. There is no changing room, no ticket booth, and rarely another soul — just steam lifting off the water and the wide, empty sweep of North Iceland's interior moors. Hveraborg has never been developed for tourism, and that is precisely its appeal: a stone-lined natural basin, warmed from below, sitting quietly in a landscape where the ground itself still breathes. It isn't a place you stumble on by accident — you have to want to find it.

Hveraborg's hot water surfaces directly inside the Síká river itself rather than in a purpose-built pool — bathers soak in two natural pots formed where the river crosses the geothermal area. (Source: NAT.is)

Gagnlegar upplýsingar
Besti tími
Summer, when the moorland track and hiking route are most likely to be passable and daylight hours are long; this remote highland-fringe area is unsuitable for casual winter visits.
Tímalengd
Allow at least 2–3 hours round trip once you reach the trailhead, including the roughly one-hour hike each way.
Leiðarvísir
No paved road reaches Hveraborg. Guides describe leaving Route 1 on a track just east of the Síká river, driving to a locked gate, then hiking roughly an hour each way across open moorland. The route is not officially marked or maintained, so this access description has not been independently verified beyond published travel-guide accounts. (Source: NAT.is)
Samgöngur
A car is needed to reach the trailhead gate (locals recommend a 4x4 given the unpaved track); beyond that it is on foot only. No organized tours are known to service Hveraborg.
