Torfajökull forms part of the active Torfajökull central volcano and caldera system in the Highlands. A Caldera Painted by Heat
Torfajökull's strongest story is geological. Rhyolite magma, geothermal alteration, glaciers and erosion have produced an unusually varied landscape of pale mountains, obsidian, coloured mineral deposits, hot springs and canyons. The system remains an active central volcano, and its eruption history is intertwined with other Icelandic volcanic systems. The colours visitors associate with Fjallabak are therefore not decorative accidents; they are evidence of the heat and chemistry beneath the landscape.
