Holuhraun

Holuhraun lies in the remote central Highlands north of Dyngjujökull. A fissure eruption began here in late August 2014 during the Bárðarbunga volcanic unrest and produced an extensive new basalt lava field. By December 2014 the new lava covered more than 75 square kilometres. The area is remote and conditions can be severe, so access should always be planned using current road, weather and land-management information.
