Gullfoss is located on Route 35, about 10 km from Geysir. The site has multiple viewpoints: - Upper viewpoint: Panoramic views from above - Lower viewpoint: Close-up views from the canyon rim (can get very wet from spray) The waterfall is fed by the Hvítá river, which originates from Langjökull glacier. In winter, parts of the falls freeze, creating stunning ice formations. Facilities include a café, gift shop, and restrooms.

In the early 20th century, foreign investors wanted to harness Gullfoss for hydroelectric power. A local woman, Sigríður Tómasdóttir, fought tirelessly to save the waterfall, even threatening to throw herself into it. Her efforts succeeded, and Gullfoss was saved. Today, a memorial stone honours her legacy.
