Fuel & EV Charging in Iceland
Everything you need to know about petrol stations, diesel, electric vehicle charging and Ring Road fuel planning.
About Fuel Prices in Iceland
Iceland has some of the most expensive fuel in Europe — typically 280–340 ISK/litre for 95-octane petrol (approx. €1.90–€2.30). Diesel is slightly cheaper. Filling up in Reykjavík (especially at Costco or ÓB) before long journeys will save you money. Prices at rural stations on F-roads can be significantly higher.

🏔️ Highland F-Road Fuel Advice
- 🚨 F-roads (starting with F) are only open in summer — typically late June to September.
- ⛽ Carry extra fuel in a jerry can — some Highland routes have 200+ km gaps between stations.
- 🔋 EVs are generally NOT recommended for F-road trips. Limited charging + range anxiety risks.
- 🗺️ Check road.is (Vegagerðin) for real-time F-road opening status before departing.
- 💳 Most stations accept card — but carry £20 cash in case of card reader issues in remote areas.
- 📱 Download the Charge.is app before your trip to locate nearby EV chargers.
