Historia y Antecedentes

Ólafsfjarðarkirkja was built in 1915 and designed by Rögnvaldur Ólafsson and Einar Erlendsson. The protected church was extended in 1997 with a parish hall, while the original building and its historic furnishings remained central to the complex.

Ólafsfjarðarkirkja is the parish church of Ólafsfjörður and one of the town's main historic buildings. The protected concrete church was built in 1915 to designs by architects Rögnvaldur Ólafsson and Einar Erlendsson. The church has a traditional nave and tower form interpreted in early-20th-century concrete construction. It was enlarged in 1997, when a parish hall and additional facilities were added to the north side. Inside are several notable objects. The altarpiece by Maron Sölvason dates from the church's consecration period and depicts Christ in Gethsemane. A silver chalice and paten from 1746 came from Kvíabekkjarkirkja, linking the building to the older ecclesiastical history of Ólafsfjörður. The church remains an active place of worship and is best appreciated as part of a walk through the compact town centre.
