Lagarfljót es el tercer lago más grande de Islandia y el hogar del legendario Lagarfljótsormurinn, un monstruo lacustre islandés comparable al monstruo del lago Ness, del que se tiene noticia desde el siglo XIV. El largo y estrecho lago glaciar se extiende a lo largo de 25 km a través del valle de Fljótsdalshérað, alimentado por el río Jökulsá á Dal y el río glaciar Lagarfljót.
