Halldórsskora (Elephant Rock)

Halldórsskora is a rugged section of Heimaey's western sea cliffs that has become internationally known as Elephant Rock. Seen from the right angle offshore, the dark volcanic rock creates the unmistakable impression of an elephant's head with a trunk reaching down toward the ocean. The attraction is less a conventional walk-up rock than part of the wider cliff landscape of Vestmannaeyjar. Steep ground and exposure mean visitors should not treat the edge as an informal viewpoint to scramble toward. The clearest perspective is generally from the sea on a boat trip around Heimaey, where the shape can be seen in context with the island's other caves, stacks and bird cliffs.
