„Dyrhólaós er 4,8 km2 stórt vatnsflæmi, skammt frá Vík í Mýrdal. Þar eru sjávarleirur, þær einu á Suðurlandi, með sérstæðum lífsskilyrðum“ (1). Þar er fjölbreytt fuglalíf og hafa fundist þar 51 fuglategund í talningum. Margar fuglategundir sem fundust á ósnum eru á válista Náttúrfræðistofunnar en Dyrhólaós er á Náttúrminjaskrá (2).
