Landmannalaugar Hot Springs
South Iceland
Journey to Landmannalaugar, a renowned geothermal area nestled within the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the southern Icelandic Highlands. Here, you can bathe in a natural hot river, winding through vibrant rhyolite mountains and lush green fields, celebrating its extraordinary natural beauty.
Wade into a genuinely wild hot river at the foot of rhyolite mountains, at the start of Iceland's most famous multi-day hiking trail.
Historia
Landmannalaugar sits at the heart of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, where rhyolite mountains streaked in green, ochre and pink rise above a black lava field called Laugahraun. At its edge, a cold mountain stream runs into a geothermal spring, and where the two mix, hikers simply wade in and sit down in the current — no pool walls or tiled edges, just a natural channel of water running anywhere from pleasantly warm to properly hot depending on exactly where you settle. This is also the traditional starting point of the Laugavegur trail, the famous 55-kilometre route to Þórsmörk, so a soak here is often the first or last stop of a multi-day trek. Landmannalaugar rewards a day trip on its own too — but reaching it means driving a genuine F-road through the Highlands, only possible in summer, which keeps the crowds far smaller than at Iceland's roadside attractions.
Historia
Landmannalaugar has drawn bathers to its natural hot river for generations, and became widely known once it was established as the starting point of the Laugavegur hiking trail within the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. There is no single founding date to cite — its history is that of an unmanaged wild bathing site rather than a built attraction.
¿Sabías que?
The warm water at Landmannalaugar isn't uniformly heated — it's a cold glacial stream mixing with a geothermal spring at the edge of the Laugahraun lava field, so the temperature (roughly 36–40°C) genuinely depends on exactly where in the current you sit.

Preguntas frecuentes
Do I need a 4x4 to get to Landmannalaugar?+
Yes. The final approach on F208 or F225 is an unpaved highland F-road with unbridged river crossings, and only high-clearance 4x4 vehicles are permitted — a regular 2WD car, or a rental marketed loosely as a "4x4," is often not enough. Never attempt a river crossing if the water is rising or you are unsure of its depth.
When is Landmannalaugar accessible?+
The F-roads leading in typically open in mid-to-late June and close again around mid-September, depending on snowmelt and river levels. Outside that window the area is effectively cut off for independent drivers.
Is the hot spring bathing free?+
Yes, soaking in the natural river itself is free. A separate parking fee usually applies at the trailhead car park, and there is typically a small charge to use the showers at the mountain hut.
What should I know before getting in?+
Enter slowly at the marked access points and test the temperature with your hand or foot first, since it varies across the current. Expect a soft, slightly muddy streambed rather than a smooth pool floor — many visitors keep sandals on, and it is wise to limit soaking sessions to 15–20 minutes with breaks.
