Hákarlavogur
Westfjords
Nestled dramatically within the rugged Westfjords cliffs, Hakarlavogur is a striking natural geothermal pool, often hailed as one of Iceland's most beautiful. This unique hot spring appears carved directly into the dark volcanic rock, reflecting the stark beauty of its surroundings. IMPORTANT: Hakarlavogur is on PRIVATE LAND near the Reykjanes farm and Gjogur airstrip. The landowning family has publicly stated this is private property and that trespassers may be reported to the police. Permission for public visits has not been granted -- do not visit without the owners' explicit consent.
Historia
Set into dark volcanic rock on the Strandir coast, beside the tiny farm of Reykjanes and the Gjögur airstrip, Hákarlavogur is a small hot pot dammed with concrete against the natural stone — warm water cupped at the edge of the Atlantic, with room for roughly six to ten bathers. Photos of it circulate widely for its stark, cinematic beauty: black rock, grey sea, and a pocket of steaming water in between. That visibility has come at a cost. Hákarlavogur sits on private land, and the family who owns it has publicly asked that people not bathe there without permission, after unauthorized visits and social-media attention brought unwanted foot traffic to their property. It remains a genuinely striking spot — but one to admire respectfully rather than assume open access to.
