About this experience

The Þórsmörk Super Jeep Tour is an adventurous journey into one of Iceland’s most remote and breathtaking highland areas, accessible only by specially modified vehicles. Traveling in a Super Jeep allows you to cross unbridged glacial rivers and rough terrain safely, turning the journey itself into part of the experience.

The tour leads into Þórsmörk, a lush valley surrounded by glaciers, rugged mountains, and dramatic volcanic landscapes. Along the way, you visit Gígjökull, an outlet glacier of Eyjafjallajökull that played a key role during the 2010 volcanic eruption. Here, the contrast between ice, ash, and volcanic terrain offers a striking insight into Iceland’s geology.

The adventure continues with a walk into Stakkholtsgjá, a narrow and atmospheric canyon with towering moss-covered walls and a shallow stream running along its floor. Local folklore suggests the canyon once served as a natural hiding place, adding a sense of mystery to the experience.

Þórsmörk is known for its unique microclimate, often calmer than surrounding areas, and for its remarkable variety of landscapes, from birch forests to deep gorges and glacier views. On the way back, there is a stop in Hvolsvöllur, a good place for coffee or snacks before returning to town at the end of the tour.

This tour is ideal for travellers seeking a true highland adventure, combining off-road driving, short walks, and unforgettable scenery in one of Iceland’s most iconic wilderness areas.!

Good to know

Travellers should dress for Iceland’s changing highland weather, as conditions can be cooler and more unpredictable than in coastal areas. Warm, layered clothing is essential, along with a waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers.

Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support are strongly recommended for walking on uneven, rocky, and sometimes wet terrain. A hat and gloves are advisable, even in summer.

It is recommended to bring a small backpack, a refillable water bottle, and snacks or a packed lunch, as food and drinks are not included. Sunglasses and sunscreen can be useful on clear days, and a camera or phone is recommended to capture the dramatic highland scenery.

The Þórsmörk Super Jeep Tour involves off-road driving, glacial river crossings, and short walks on uneven natural terrain. Travellers should be in good general health and comfortable with light walking on gravel, sand, and rocky paths.

The tour is not wheelchair accessible due to rough terrain and river crossings. Infant seats can be provided upon request, but this must be arranged in advance. For safety reasons, infants and very young children may not be suitable for this tour, depending on conditions.

Weather and road conditions in the highlands can change rapidly, and the itinerary may be adjusted or modified for safety reasons. Access to Þórsmörk is seasonal and depends on river levels and weather conditions.

Warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are strongly recommended. No prior off-road or hiking experience is required, but participants should be comfortable spending extended time in remote highland environments.
