History & Background
The history of Vattarnesviti is intrinsically linked to its role as a vital maritime beacon. The first lighthouse on Vattarnestangi, overlooking Reyðarfjörður, was constructed in 1912. This initial structure was a cylindrical concrete tower, standing 3.3 meters high to its balcony around the lantern room, with a diameter of 2.4 meters. It was designed by the engineer Thorvaldur Krabbe, marking an early effort to ensure safe navigation in the Eastfjords. Decades later, as maritime technology and safety standards evolved, a new lighthouse was deemed necessary. In 1957, a more substantial Vattarnesviti was built. This modern lighthouse shares its design with the Hólmsbergsviti and Seleyjarviti lighthouses, both erected in 1956 and designed by Axel Sveinsson. The current Vattarnesviti stands impressively at 12.3 meters tall, with its light positioned 26 meters above sea level, providing an even more effective guide for ships. The significance of Vattarnesviti extends beyond its functional purpose; it has become a recognizable symbol of the region. Its iconic status was further cemented in 2013 when it was featured on an Icelandic postage stamp, celebrating its enduring presence and contribution to the Eastfjords' coastal landscape and heritage.

The Silent Watcher of Reyðarfjörður
Locals tell of a benevolent spirit, a 'fjord-watcher,' that resides near Vattarnesviti. It is said to guide lost sailors home during the harshest storms, its silent presence a comforting beacon even when the lighthouse light is obscured by mist.
