Vatnsnes

Vatnsnes projects into Húnaflói in northwest North Iceland and is one of the country's most rewarding coastal wildlife areas. Seal colonies are the peninsula's signature attraction, with well-known observation points including Illugastaðir and coastal areas where animals rest near the tideline. On the eastern side of Vatnsnes stands Hvítserkur, a striking 15-metre-high basalt sea stack shaped by wave erosion. The formation is one of North Iceland's most photographed landmarks and is surrounded by seabird habitat and seal-watching opportunities. Inland, Borgarvirki rises above the surrounding plains as an unusual volcanic plug adapted in the past as a defensive fortification. A circuit around Vatnsnes is best treated as a half-day or longer scenic drive. Roads are partly gravel, conditions can vary, and wildlife stops reward patience. Hvammstangi and the Icelandic Seal Center provide useful information before or after the loop.
