Torfahlaup

Torfahlaup is a narrow gorge where Markarfljót cuts through the landscape. At its tightest point the gap is only a few metres wide. Local tradition says that people once jumped across the narrow section, and the place-name is tied to the story of a young man named Torfi who supposedly made the leap while carrying a woman as they fled from her relatives. The gorge should be viewed as a natural and folklore site; attempting to jump the gap would be extremely dangerous.
