About Surtsey

A volcanic island created in the 1963–1967 eruption south of Iceland, protected as a natural laboratory and listed by UNESCO.

A globally important young volcanic island whose natural colonisation has been scientifically observed from the beginning.

Surtsey is one of the world's most important natural laboratories for studying ecological succession on newly formed land. The island was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2008. Public landing and diving by the island are prohibited; it is a place to learn about and view from afar rather than visit directly.
