„Í Suðurárbotnum eru uppsprettur Suðurár sem er vatnsmesta þveráin sem fellur úr Ódáðahrauni. Aðrennslissvæði hennar er mjög víðlent, nær suður í Dyngjufjöll og austur í Herðubreiðarfjöll. Í Suðurárbotnum er allmikill gróður, bæði valllendi og víðigrundir en jafnframt nokkur uppblástur og landeyðing. Á þessum slóðum er hins vegar nægur raki þannig að land grær fljótt. Ýmis mannvirki eru í Suðurárbotnum, m.a. eyðibýlið Hrauntunga, gömul tótt sem gæti verið leifar sæluhúss.“
