Skálanes combines a traditional East Iceland farm setting with modern conservation, education and research. The restored farmhouse now serves as a nature and heritage centre, while the surrounding land is managed as a nature reserve. The site also functions as a scientific research station and is part of the international INTERACT network for terrestrial research and monitoring in the Arctic.

Skálanes Nature & Heritage Centre is a visitor destination and research site at the mouth of Seyðisfjörður, set in a restored Icelandic farmhouse inside its own nature reserve. The landscape includes snow-capped mountains, large sea cliffs, sheltered coves and open coastline. Birdlife is one of the main reasons to visit: Visit Austurland notes that thousands of birds from around 40 species breed in the area. The nature reserve and centre should be treated as one destination rather than separate attractions. The former standalone sea-cliffs viewpoint is part of the same Skálanes landscape, so its coastal-viewing context is preserved here instead of as a separate page. Skálanes also operates as a scientific research station focused on natural and cultural research and participates in the INTERACT network of Arctic research and monitoring stations. Access is part of the experience. Visit Austurland states that the road is passable almost all the way to Skálanes, but an unbridged river lies on the route. Conditions can vary, so visitors should check current access and weather before travelling and avoid attempting a crossing when conditions are unsafe.
