Skaftárósviti
About Skaftárósviti
Perched on a dramatic expanse of dark volcanic sand, Skaftárósviti is Iceland's oldest iron-lattice lighthouse. This striking red 19.5-meter tall beacon, originally built in 1911, was relocated to its current stunning South Iceland location in 1953, where it now guides mariners with its historic charm alongside a rustic stone hut.
History & Background
Skaftárósviti boasts a fascinating history, beginning its life in 1911 not at its current location, but on Rifstangi on the Melrakkaslétta peninsula. Originally constructed as an iron-lattice lighthouse, its striking red frame served as a crucial navigational aid in its initial northern post for over 40 years. This makes its journey and subsequent re-erection all the more remarkable. In 1953, the decision was made to relocate this significant structure. The lighthouse was meticulously dismantled, piece by piece, and transported across considerable distances to its new home at Skaftárósi in South Iceland. This relocation transformed it into a unique historical landmark, as it holds the distinction of being the oldest iron-lattice lighthouse in the entire country, a testament to Icelandic engineering and the importance placed on maritime safety. Over the decades, Skaftárósviti has been updated to meet modern demands. In 1983, a radar transponder was installed, initially powered by disposable batteries. Further modernization occurred in 1989 when the lighthouse was fully electrified, drawing power from the main grid, ensuring its continued reliability as a beacon for ships navigating the rugged Icelandic coastline. Designed by engineer Thorvald Krabbe, its 19.5-meter height makes it a prominent feature in the desolate yet captivating landscape.
