About

About Öræfajökull

A glacier-covered stratovolcano in southeast Iceland, home to Hvannadalshnúkur and the source of major historic eruptions in 1362 and 1727.

See one of Iceland's largest and most dramatic glacier-covered volcanoes, with a history of major explosive eruptions.

The 1362 eruption was exceptionally powerful and devastated the settled district around the volcano, while the 1727 eruption again produced destructive glacial floods. Today Öræfajökull dominates the skyline above the Skaftafell and Öræfi area and remains one of Iceland's most imposing volcanic systems.
