History & Background
Kvernufoss lies in Kvernugil near Skógar, where the river drops from the old coastal escarpment into a narrow gorge. Its name is connected with milling activity in the area; traces of old mill use are part of the local history behind the place-name. Today the short gorge walk and the possibility of passing behind the falling water in suitable conditions are the main visitor experience.
Kvernufoss is a roughly 30-metre waterfall in a narrow gorge just east of Skógafoss in the Skógar area. A short walking trail leads into the gorge, and in suitable conditions visitors can follow the path behind the falling water. The enclosed setting makes Kvernufoss feel very different from nearby Skógafoss. Ground near the waterfall can be wet and slippery, so sturdy footwear and attention to local conditions are important.
Folklore
Story & Folklore
Kvernufoss is Seljalandsfoss's hidden twin — just a 1.5-kilometre walk east but visited by a fraction of the crowds. The 30-metre falls drop from the same former sea cliff escarpment, and like Seljalandsfoss, you can walk behind the water curtain into a small cave. Unlike its famous neighbour, Kvernufoss is intimate and quiet. The basalt walls are thick with lush green moss; the air behind the falls is cool and misty. The name means 'Mill Falls' — old mill ruins can be found nearby. A perfect antidote to Iceland's most crowded places: world-class scenery accessible to anyone willing to walk an extra kilometre off the tourist trail.
Did You Know?
Kvernufoss is often overlooked in favor of its larger neighbor, Skógafoss, making it a peaceful and less crowded gem to discover.
