Illugastaðir became nationally known through the murders of Natan Ketilsson and Pétur Jónsson in 1828. Agnes Magnúsdóttir and Friðrik Sigurðsson were convicted of the killings and executed at Þrístapar in 1830. Today the site is better known to most visitors for seal watching, but the historic events remain an important part of its identity.

Illugastaðir is one of the most established seal-watching sites on the Vatnsnes peninsula in northwest North Iceland. From the parking area, a walking path follows the coast toward a viewing shelter where visitors can watch seals resting on offshore rocks or swimming in the shallows. Seals are present on many days of the year, although sightings are never guaranteed. The coastline also supports abundant birdlife, particularly eider ducks and Arctic terns. To protect the nesting eider colony, the visitor area is closed for part of the spring each year, so access should always be checked before making the drive around Vatnsnes. Illugastaðir also has a darker historical layer. The farm is associated with the 1828 murders of Natan Ketilsson and Pétur Jónsson.
