This record previously used the misleading name 'Hvítárvatn Campsite'. The official campsite is Hvítárnes, beside the protected Hvítárnes hut on Kjalvegur hinn forni. FÍ provides a toilet, water and camping by the hut; there are no showers. Summer access to the hut area is by suitable highland vehicle, while hikers also reach it on the historic Kjalvegur route.
