Reaching Hvannadalshnúkur is a serious mountaineering objective rather than a normal hiking stop. Routes cross glaciated terrain with crevasse hazards and rapidly changing weather, so ascents require appropriate glacier skills, equipment and conditions; guided climbs are the normal choice for visitors.
