Húsavíkurhöfn

Húsavík Harbour is the maritime centre of Húsavík and the departure point for the whale-watching trips that have made the town internationally known. Several operators sail from the harbour into the sheltered waters of Skjálfandi Bay using traditional wooden boats, modern vessels and smaller RIB craft. The harbour remains a working waterfront rather than a purpose-built tourist attraction, which gives it much of its character. Fishing activity, excursion boats, cafés and restaurants share the shoreline, while the mountains across Skjálfandi form a dramatic backdrop. Many of Húsavík's principal visitor attractions are clustered around the harbour. Húsavík Church stands just above the waterfront and the Whale Museum is nearby, making the area easy to explore on foot. Even visitors who are not taking a boat tour can enjoy the harbour atmosphere, views across the bay and the town's strong connection to the sea.
