Helgafell is an inactive volcanic cone, a geological formation that speaks to Iceland's intense volcanic activity. While Iceland is one of the world's youngest countries geologically, constantly being shaped by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Helgafell represents a quieter, older chapter in this ongoing story. Its name, derived from Old Norse, means "Helgi's mountain," suggesting a historical association with an individual named Helgi, likely an early settler or a figure of local significance. Located on Heimaey, the largest island of the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) archipelago, Helgafell is part of a cluster of volcanic formations that define this region. Though inactive today, its presence is a constant reminder of the island's fiery past, including the dramatic 1973 Eldfell eruption on Heimaey, which added significant new land to the island. Helgafell itself is a testament to the cycles of creation and dormancy that characterize Iceland's dynamic landscape.

Helgafell is one of the prominent volcanic cones on Heimaey. The 227-metre hill predates the 1973 Eldfell eruption and provides a useful contrast with the much younger cone next to it. Walking access is possible from local routes, but slopes can be loose and exposed, so visitors should use established paths and check weather conditions.
