Elliðaey's history is predominantly shaped by its natural significance rather than human settlement, as it remains an uninhabited island. Its most enduring legacy lies in its role as a vital natural monument, recognized for supporting some of the most extensive and unique seabird colonies in Iceland. For centuries, the island's remote and rugged cliffs have provided an undisturbed sanctuary for a multitude of species. The island's geological features, including its two distinct cinder cones, Litli Bunki and Stóri Bunki, speak to its volcanic origins, typical of the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. While there's no record of permanent human habitation, the iconic white house on the island, often mistakenly referred to as belonging to Björk, was actually built by the Elliðaey Hunting Association in 1953 as a base for puffin hunting, a practice that has since become more regulated. Today, Elliðaey continues to be a critical site for ornithological research and conservation, ensuring its rich avian biodiversity is preserved for future generations.

Elliðaey is an uninhabited island in Vestmannaeyjar. Its steep cliffs support large seabird colonies, while the solitary lodge on the grassy island has become its best-known visual feature. Landing and climbing access are difficult, so most visitors experience Elliðaey from sightseeing boats rather than by going ashore.
