Drekafoss, or 'the Dragon Waterfall,' is a testament to Iceland's dynamic geological history. Located in the Drekagil gorge in North Iceland, this 30-meter cascade has been sculpted over millennia by the relentless forces of water and volcanic activity. Iceland, being one of the world's youngest countries geologically, is continuously shaped by its active volcanic landscape, which gives rise to countless waterfalls like Drekafoss. The dark, rugged rock formations seen around the falls are characteristic of these volcanic origins. The waterfall is also known as "Skinandi," a name that likely refers to its shimmering or bright appearance. Its more famous name, "Drekafoss," ties into local folklore and the evocative power of its surroundings. The Drekagil gorge itself, meaning 'Dragon Gully,' further reinforces the mythical connection, suggesting a long-standing appreciation and perhaps awe for this powerful natural feature within Icelandic culture and storytelling.

Drekafoss lies in Drekagil, a narrow canyon on the eastern side of the Dyngjufjöll mountains near Askja. The waterfall, also known as Skínandi, drops about 30 metres near the inner end of the canyon. This is a remote Highland stop: visitors should check current access, road and weather conditions before travelling to the Askja area.
