Búri's history is written in rock, dating back thousands of years to Iceland's tumultuous volcanic past. It was formed during a significant eruption, likely from the Leitahraun lava field, where immense quantities of basaltic lava flowed across the landscape. As the lava moved, the outer crust solidified due to exposure to the cooler air, forming a solid roof and walls, while the superheated molten rock continued to flow beneath. This process created the distinctive striated patterns and textures visible on the cave walls today. Eventually, the source of the lava diminished or diverted, causing the molten rock to drain away from the newly formed tunnel. This left behind the hollow cavern we see today – a spectacular lava tube. The intricate textures, striations, and varied hues of reddish-brown and dark grey visible on Búri's walls are direct imprints of this ancient geological process, a frozen moment in time from when the Earth was actively shaping itself. These lava tubes are vital records of Iceland's volcanic activity, offering scientists and visitors alike a window into the planet's dynamic geological evolution.

Búri is a lava tube in Ölfus, South Iceland, formed when the surface of a lava flow hardened while molten lava continued moving beneath it and later drained away. The cave preserves striking flow textures and deep underground passages. Búri is not a simple roadside cave: its depth and terrain require appropriate equipment, experience and careful access planning.
