Akranesviti
About Akranesviti
Perched dramatically at the tip of Akranes, Akranesviti is more than just a navigational aid; it's a beacon of charm. This vibrant orange lighthouse offers breathtaking panoramic views across Faxaflói Bay, encompassing Snæfellsnes peninsula and even Reykjavík on a clear day. Its accessible location makes it a perfect stop for photographers and nature lovers alike.
History & Background
The history of Akranesviti is marked by the evolution of maritime navigation in Iceland. The first lighthouse at this location was built in 1918, a smaller, white structure that served the local fishing community and guided vessels into Akranes harbor. As maritime traffic increased and navigational technology advanced, a more powerful and prominent beacon was deemed necessary. This led to the construction of the current, taller Akranesviti in 1947. This iconic orange lighthouse, standing at 23 meters (75 feet), quickly became a recognizable landmark. While its primary function remains to guide ships safely through Faxaflói Bay and past the treacherous coastlines, it has also become a beloved symbol of Akranes itself. Today, the older lighthouse, though no longer active as a navigational aid, holds a special place in the community. It is sometimes used for cultural events, such as acoustic concerts and art installations, allowing visitors to step inside and experience its unique atmosphere, blending history with contemporary art and music.
