Photographer's Route — Reykjanes Peninsula
The 12 best photo locations with timing and technique tips
Dark water, fog and surrounding mountains at golden hour — the most atmospheric spot on the peninsula.
Side light at dawn turns the lava orange-red. Coastal cliffs and sea stacks in the foreground.
Backlight the steam columns against a blue sky — shoot from the south viewing platform for best results.
Mineral colours at their most vivid in morning light. Use a macro lens for the crystal-like mineral formations.
Wide-angle shot framing the rift valley through the bridge structure. Use polariser for sky contrast.
Overcast light is ideal for lava textures — no harsh shadows. Golden hour makes the basalt glow.
Guillemots, kittiwakes and razorbills nesting on dramatic sea cliffs — telephoto essential in summer.
Remote white church by the sea — dramatic stormy skies are the Reykjanes photographer's dream backdrop.
Reykjanes weather creates extraordinary dramatic skies — dark storm clouds, breaking light and steam add atmosphere that clear skies never achieve. Embrace the elements.
Reykjanes Planning Tips
Book Blue Lagoon Early
The Blue Lagoon sells out 2–4 weeks ahead in summer. Book at bluelagoon.com as soon as your flights are confirmed.
Rent a Car
Public transport to most Reykjanes attractions is limited. A rental car gives you freedom to explore at your own pace.
Check Volcanic Access
Eruption site access can close with little warning. Always check safetravel.is before heading to Fagradalsfjall or Grindavík.
Morning Start
Geothermal areas and coastal trails are far less crowded before 10:00. Early starts also give the best photographic light.
Combine with Capital Region
Reykjanes and Reykjavík can be combined in a 2–3 day trip. The two regions complement each other perfectly.
Guided Tours Available
Guided tours from Reykjavík include transport and expert commentary — ideal if you don't want to self-drive.
