About Englandshverir
Englandshverir, located in the picturesque Lundarreykjardalur valley of West Iceland, is a remarkable geothermal area where the raw power of Iceland's volcanic geology is beautifully displayed. As you walk along the Tunguá river, you'll discover various warm ponds nestled among the rocks, visibly steaming and inviting. The main image vividly captures this unique experience, showing the clear, deep blue river flowing over its rocky bed, with misty geothermal pools just upstream, surrounded by charming waterfalls and vibrant grassy banks. In the background, rolling hills rise under a dynamic sky. Beyond these inviting pools, a path beneath what is described as a rustic pipe bridge leads you across the river, offering a unique vantage point. Here, you can observe ancient stone structures that once dammed two streams – one hot, one cold – creating a pool formerly used for swimming lessons. While this older pool is now too cool for bathing, further upstream along the hot stream, you'll find delightful pools formed by overflow. These can sometimes be too hot, but lower down the stream, the temperature is often just right for a comfortable soak. Englandshverir truly embodies the essence of Icelandic geothermal wonders, providing a serene and unique connection to nature's thermal energy, perfect for those seeking an authentic and refreshing experience.
History
The history of Englandshverir is deeply intertwined with the practical use of Iceland's abundant geothermal resources. For generations, Icelanders have harnessed these natural hot springs for various purposes, including bathing, heating, and even teaching, demonstrating a profound connection to their environment. Historically, the area near the pump house featured an ingeniously designed system where ancient stone structures were built to channel and converge a hot stream with a cold one. This created a unique, naturally tempered pool that served a vital community function: a place for swimming lessons, showcasing the early ingenuity of Icelanders in adapting to and utilizing their environment. While that specific historic swimming pool has since cooled and is no longer suitable for bathing, the spirit of geothermal bathing lives on. The discovery and use of the various warm ponds and overflow pools along the Tunguá river continue this ancient tradition, allowing visitors today to experience the same natural warmth that has drawn people to these springs for centuries.
